Our Story

The story of El Paisa Bakery is a testament to overcoming adversity, unwavering determination, and a deep passion for baking. Founded by Libardo Morales, who was born in Marmato, Caldas, in 1960, the bakery has its roots in a rural upbringing filled with the beauty of nature and the challenges of country life.

From a young age, Libardo dreamed of a better future, but life presented him with challenges that would test his heart and his resolve. At just 12 years old, a family tragedy forced him to leave his rural home and move to Virginia, Caldas, with nothing but hope in his heart.

The years following were marked by loss and hardship. At 14, after a devastating flood destroyed his family's home, Libardo found himself living in a shelter in Pereira. Yet, amid the darkest times, he discovered a flicker of light and hope in the world of baking.

It was then that Libardo realized his true calling. Inspired by the bakers he saw, who worked with dedication and love, creating delicious breads and pastries that brought joy to others, Libardo was determined to learn the craft. He worked without pay, driven by a passion to learn and grow in the art of baking.

Libardo’s dedication didn’t go unnoticed. Soon, the head baker saw his potential and offered him a position as an apprentice. Eager to learn, Libardo quickly honed his skills and became an expert baker.

At 18, Libardo took a leap of faith, working as a baker in a small bakery. It was here that he created his first cake—a three-tiered delight covered with buttercream, sugar, and lemon. The reaction from the people was extraordinary, and Libardo knew he had found his true passion.

The bakery owner, impressed by Libardo’s cake, invited him to his daughter's quinceañera to share the cake with guests. This experience deepened Libardo’s love for baking and showed him that his passion had already begun opening doors to experiences he never imagined.

Libardo’s journey continued when he moved to Cali, where he established his first business, Panadería La Ricura, in a distant neighborhood. He went on to open a second bakery in the town of Jumbo, Valle, and a third in the municipality of Vijes, Valle.

But life wasn’t without its challenges. In 1998, Libardo moved to the United States, specifically to New York, where he continued to work as a baker. It was in New York that he met the love of his life, his wife, a survivor of the 9/11 attacks.

Together, they decided to seek new opportunities, and they moved to South Carolina, where Libardo opened a new bakery. However, life remained difficult, and Libardo had to take on other jobs to survive.
Despite these challenges, Libardo’s love for baking never faltered. With the help of his children, Sebastián and Justin, Libardo eventually opened El Paisa Bakery, a new bakery and restaurant that quickly became a success.

El Paisa Bakery is more than just a place that serves delicious baked goods—it is a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the power of family and passion. Libardo’s journey has been filled with challenges and setbacks, but through it all, he has never given up. Instead, he has created a legacy that will inspire future generations.

Libardo’s story proves that passion and determination can help anyone reach their dreams, no matter the obstacles in their path. His journey is a reminder that it is never too late to pursue your dreams, and that love and family can be the driving force that propels us forward.
